Substitute Teaching

Are you interested in becoming a substitute teacher,
but do not have a teaching certificate?

Do you have a bachelor's degree (or higher)?
 
These step-by-step instructions could help you obtain your Substitute Teaching Certificate through the West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Professional Preparation.
 
 
Complete an application for professional employment
 
Interview with the Superintendent:

Complete the RESA Online Substitute Training Program: 
 
*All new substitutes require the superintendent's recommendation to enroll in the RESA Online Substitute Training Program.  Enrollment in the RESA Online Substitute Training Program does not guarantee employment by Pocahontas County Schools. 
 
A $70 money order (not check) and completed Contract of Understanding are required for enrollment in the RESA Online Substitute Training Program
 
The RESA Online Substitute Training Program will require: 
-    Completion of 10 hours of on-line training.  RESA will contact and communicate with participant via e-mail.  RESA will provide participant with the link to complete the 10 hours of training, user name, and password to access necessary information.  
-    Completion of 6 hours of classroom observation. Classroom observation must be completed in 3 hour increments at either elementary, middle, or high school level - all 6 hours cannot be completed at one level. Each prospective substitute is responsible for contacting principals to schedule a time to complete classroom observation.  Please see the list of principals and contact information below.   
-     2 hours of In Person Instruction at RESA in Summersville, West Virginia.  This instruction is provided twice monthly.  RESA will provide dates instruction will be offered.  You will be contacted by RESA if the scheduled date is changed. 
-    Completion of the 10 clock hours of online training and completion of the In Person Instruction MUST be completed within 4 months of submitting the Contract of Understanding or the $70 enrollment fee will be forfeited. 
 
Order an official transcript from the college/university you received your bachelors degree. You may have these sent to

Complete a background check through www.l1enrollment.com.    The background check has a 90 day expiration.  The application of certification must be submitted to WVDE within 90 days of the completion date of the background check.  It is recommended having the background check completed at approximately the same time as you complete the RESA In Person Instruction.

Complete the West Virginia Department of Education application for certification.  
            All applicants must completed Form 7
            For Short Term Substitute  complete Form 2S OR
            For Long Term Substitute complete Form 2L
